How Does Trip Insurance Work?

Even the best-planned trips can be impacted by an unexpected event or unplanned interruption, illness, road closures, traffic accidents, medical emergency, adverse weather, natural disasters, or more. Trip insurance allows you to recoup the investment you made in your trip if you meet the terms and conditions outlined in the plan.

Say it’s the day before your big RV trip and your daughter comes down with a nasty case of stomach flu. You had booked a non-refundable trip, and now you’re out hundreds – or even thousands – of dollars. Or are you?

By selecting our trip insurance, you could be reimbursed 100% of your prepaid RV rental booking cost in the event you had to cancel due to a covered event, rather than $0 as you would if you selected a vehicle with a strict cancellation policy. 

Some trip insurance coverages include: Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption and Emergency Assistance and Transportation.

  • Some covered events that apply to Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption (please note that terms and conditions apply): 
    • Traffic accident en route to pick up your RV
    • Onset of pre-existing medical conditions while on your trip (if certain requirements are met at the time of purchase)
    • Sickness, accidental injury, or loss of life of you or a travel companion while on your trip
    • Mandatory evacuations, road closures, or inability to access destination due to adverse weather
  • Much like stumbling upon a bear in the wild, you never know when a medical emergency will present itself. Covered expenses include:
    • Emergency transportation to the nearest suitable medical facility
    • Help to return home, if medically necessary
    • Expenses for one person of your choice to visit you if you are traveling alone and hospitalized for more than 7 days
    • Injury that first occurs during your trip

Do I need trip insurance?

We highly recommend purchasing trip insurance. It offers you coverage if you have to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a number of covered reasons and would otherwise lose your prepaid RV rental reservation and other costs.

When can I buy trip insurance?

Trip insurance is offered when you make your reservation and can be purchased up until final payment.

Who’s covered under trip insurance?

Everyone staying in the RV during the reservation is insured. Note that some coverages are subject to policy maximums.

What if I need to cancel my trip insurance plan?

If you purchase this plan and are not satisfied within 10 days of receipt, contact Outdoorsy to cancel. If you haven’t already left on your trip or filed a claim, you will receive a complete refund of your plan cost.

If I buy travel insurance today, when does coverage begin?

Trip cancellation coverage begins at 12:01 A.M. on the day after you purchase your plan. All other coverages begin when you depart on your trip.

What is Trip Cancellation coverage?

Many owners aren’t able to refund all of your prepaid payments and deposits if you have to cancel your reservation, especially as your trip’s departure date gets closer. In some cases, your entire reservation may be non-refundable. If you are prevented from taking your trip for a covered reason, a travel insurance plan can reimburse up to 100% of your non-refundable payments or deposits for your RV rental which would be lost if you canceled your reservation.

What is a covered event?

Insurance plans cannot cover all events that might cause you to cancel or interrupt your plans. Those events which are covered are listed in your Description of Coverage or Policy.

What are some of the covered events?

Some examples of unforeseen covered reasons for Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption include sickness, injury or death of you, a family member or traveling companion; school year extensions; interruption of road service; a documented traffic accident en route to your destination; interruption of water or other essential services at your destination; mandatory evacuation at your destination; your personal home made uninhabitable by hurricane or other natural disaster; flight delays due to bad weather; involuntary termination of employment; and more. Is it possible to insure pre-existing medical conditions?

Yes, your trip insurance can accept pre-existing medical conditions for you and your traveling companions as long as you purchase your plan prior to or within 24 hours of your final trip payment, provided you are medically able to travel when you buy coverage.
